Planning a fabulous family photo is a lot of fun!
But, if you’re like most moms, when you stick your head in your closet you have a whole bunch of clothes for work, some “weekend” outfits, which usually consist of some yoga pants and a cozy sweater, and a few dresses for formal occasions.
You defiantly don’t want to wear yoga pant and a sweater, you probably don’t want to look like you’re at work, and your dresses are a bit too formal – so all of a sudden you’re stressed out!
What are you going to wear for your family pictures?
What even looks good in a photo?
Family Picture Outfit Ideas Just for Moms
First of all, you have to decide on the style of family photo that you want. Most moms who are planning a modern lifestyle family photo session want photos that are fun, a little bit whimsical, candid and dynamic – but also stylish, clean and modern.
So, if that is they style of family photography that you like, you have to choose an outfit that matches the mood and style that you intent to portrait in your family photos.
1. Wear Bright Colors
Bright pops of color look great in photos!
Its too easy to default to what we normally wear to work – boring black and drab beige.
Pick your favorite color and work it into your outfit.
But also think about where you are going to display your family pictures (you’re not going through all this work just to share them of Facebook right…right…?)
If you are going to put up a gorgeous big canvas print in your great room, make sure your decor accent colors mix well with the colors you are wearing in your photos!
2. Add Textures and Layers
Pay attention to textures and layers.
Textures such as stylish knit sweaters and scarves, wool skirts and pants, a smooth satin blouse or even a flowing sheer shawl will all add variation to your photos.
Layer coats, jackets, sweaters, long and short sleeve shirts, hats and scarves, etc…
Layering is a great way to mix and match your neutrals and your colors.
Layering your outfits also gives you a very quick and easy ways to change up your outfit. For example, you can just drop your neutral charcoal wool coat to show off your gorgeous poppy red knit top.
3. Accessories Make Photos Pop!
Wear scarves, shawls, hats, jewelry, belts, purses and hair accessories.
As long as your accessories coordinate with your outfit, you really can’t go wrong.
And don’t forget about your shoes and boots!
I love the look of stylish knee high boots and tights or a full length skirt or dress with some killer heels.
Have fun with your footwear!
4. No Yoga Pants, Logos or Text
Any recognizable branding or logos are very distracting in family pictures. Text is even worse – if there is text in a photo, viewers automatically try to read it.
Logos and corporate branding also tend to instantly date a photo – what is “in” right now will be seen as tacky and dated in just a few years.
While we’re at it – lets be honest about yoga pants: Yoga pants are practically pajamas.
Unless you are having your photo taken while you are actually at the gym, doing yoga, or jogging, or rock climbing or something where yoga pants would actually be appropriate – go for a stylish pair of tights instead.
5. Wear Clothing That You Feel Comfortable In
Wear fun, practical clothing that you feel good in and you will shine in your family pictures.
If you never wear skirts, don’t wear a skirt.
If you love funky vintage dresses, wear a funky vintage dress.
If you always wear statement T-shirts….well see Tip 4.
However, don’t get stuck in a rut and fall back on comfort clothing!
Choose fresh new styles that suit your body type and accentuate your own personal sense of style. If you love the city – go urban. If you are a country girl, go country. Just try to make sure that your styles don’t clash…like say a hipster cowgirl…
When people see your photos, you want them to think – oh ya that is soooo you!
